Practical Philosophy Online
This course page is for ongoing students who have been attending Practical Philosophy Online classes in the Australian time zone. Below is some information regarding the courses available in term three, 2024 beginning in September.
Rebirth
Our subject this term is rebirth, or reincarnation. This is an idea common to cultures throughout the world. One reason for considering the subject is because the idea of reincarnation has been so widely held. It is an idea accepted both in the Buddhist and Hindu teachings; it was part of ancient Greek and Egyptian thought; it has appeared in abundant diversity around the world. An idea that has had, and continues to have, such currency is worthy of attention. Another reason is that the idea can help us live more philosophically.
Prerequisite: completion of the M3 Measure course
Philosophy as a Way of Life
The philosophers of Ancient Greece and India did not regard philosophy as just an intellectual or academic subject. To them it was about how people lived and the quality of their lives. When other areas of life fall into a state of uncertainty or doubt, philosophy can provide direction, and a sense of certainty. It can give us a greater sense of perspective on life. Philosophy can simplify, clarify and enrich our lives.
