ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The School of Philosophy (Brisbane) Inc is a non-profit, non-religious incorporated association, associated with the School
of Economic Science, London, and its branches world- wide. It began in Brisbane in the early 1990’s and has offered the introductory
course three times a year since then.
The approach to the study of philosophy is a practical one and proceeds on the principle that what is learnt is for the benefit of all
and that the teacher never ceases being a student. The philosophy courses encourage discussion on aspects of life not generally considered
these days and examination of the views expressed by a variety of western and eastern philosophers and authors.
Students are urged to keep an open mind, and always to test out the ideas put forward in the light of their own practical experience.
Study and practice go together.
Background
In 1936 a group of people came together to study economics in London seeking an understanding of the universal laws which governed
the relations between people in society. They hoped to discover principles which would help to eliminate the social ills prevailing
at that time. A school was established on the firm premise that truth and justice exist, and so could be discovered, and having been discovered,
could be practiced and taught. The discovery, practice and teaching proceeded hand in hand, until in the early 1950s it became obvious that
the key to the understanding of people in society was the study of Man himself.
And so began the first courses in Philosophy. The School's approach to the study of philosophy has been practical from the beginning,
and has proceeded on the principles that what is learnt is for the benefit of others, and that the teacher never ceases being a student.
